:URBAN AQUARIUM:

When I go to visit an aquarium, I go there specifically to see, observe, and to be immersed in underwater life. To be away from everyday urban life, to be away from land.  I go there to learn how underwater creatures live, move, and do their thing in the “other world”.  What if, like public art, an aquarium of jellyfish is placed in the view of passers by?

The installation, “URBAN AQUARIUM”, explores the concept of being “out of context” and “displaced” by recreating a jellyfish aquarium in places where you least expect.  The jellyfish in the wild are displaced when put in an aquarium. Likewise, the jellyfish in the aquarium are displaced when put in front of public passers by. This project hopes to create dialog between viewers about context and displacement and about the unexpected.  It is also an experiment to see how the jellyfish in the aquarium interact with outside world when placed in unexpected spaces.

“URBAN AQUARIUM” project started spring 2009 throughout the city of Portland. Please keep an eye out for other guerilla jellyfish aquariums you might be seeing in your neighborhood. Please contact me if you have any suggestions of the next temporary home for my migrating jellies. Enjoy!
